My Students
My kids are eager to learn more about the world and its tough issues. They represent a diverse community that love to learn, grow, and collaborate together.
They deserve the best English Language Arts has to offer, and they are excited to grapple with challenging ideas and beliefs in order to create a more equitable world.
They having difficult conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusiveness better than most adults I've worked with! They are, in fact, the next generation of movers and shakers.
They are awesome, and some of Philadelphia's most brilliant and creative minds!
My Project
Students in my class engage in units anchor around the texts Pygmallion (7th Grade) & Inside Out & Back Again (8th Grade). Both texts explore topics that help kids grapple with socio-political contexts while building their cultural competence. Specifically, students explore gender, race, citizenship, class, immigration, and refugees in history and today. While we have paired supplemental texts that support the mastery of grade-level standards, students also must engage in independent reading related to the concepts/ anchor texts to build a deeper understanding and promote academic excellence. Studies show volume of reading is important, and the CCSS is pushing context and foundational knowledge in order to build skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will have access to texts (fiction and non-fiction) that are culturally relevant and provide them with the fodder they need to become awesome empathetic citizens with diversity, equity, and inclusiveness as apart of their stance as continuous life-long learners.
