This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When I first started looking for library jobs, I did not want to teach in an elementary school. Apparently, God had a different plan because the ONLY interviews I received were for elementary positions. Five years later I would not trade my elementary kids for ANYTHING! They are kind, funny, exciting, and diverse characters in my daily story.
I absolutely love getting to meet my students as Kindergarteners and watching them grow and mature as they become 5th graders. For many of my students, their first exposure to a library is at school and I try to make their experience fun and entertaining while teaching them the basics of book care, how to find appropriate books, and searching for their next favorite read.
My Project
Students want to relate to the characters when they read a book. Unfortunately, that has not always been an option for children of color. They have often been relegated to sidekick or villain roles.
Thankfully more books are being published with main characters that are black, brown, refugee, LGBTQ+, and non-traditional allowing readers to see and relate to people they haven't been able to before. This gives students windows to broaden their knowledge and mirrors for others to finally see themselves in what they read.
Please help me add more books with minority representation to our school library.
