My students need natural light spectrum lamps for our Social Studies classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This year, none the classrooms for my 8/9 grade students have windows. Lack of natural light has been documented to lead to feelings of lethargy and depression. As teenagers are already prone to feeling lethargic and depressed, I want to set my students up for success and health.
I work at a K-9 charter school with an arts focus in a high-poverty school district that has struggled for decades to provide students with a quality education.
Our school places an emphasis on Scholarship, Craftsmanship, Character and Vision. We seek to beat the odds in our district by graduating 100% of our inaugural high school class in 2019 (the high school drop out rate in our district is over 40%).
The lamps requested in the project will be used to light our windowless classroom with natural spectrum light which has been documented in studies to be of great importance to mental health. Workers who sit near windows sleep on average 46 minutes more per night and have a better quality of life that those deprived of natural light (Daily Mail 2014). I hope to use the materials from Donors Choose to counteract some of the negative effects that a windowless classroom will have on my students.
At my school, students spend more hours a day and more days a year in school as part of our mission to increase educational outcomes and beat the odds in our struggling school district.
I worry that long hours in windowless classrooms could have a negative impact on their health - please help bring natural light to our deserving young scholars!
