Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Want to help motivate and inspire reluctant readers? I am an 8th grade Language Arts teacher, and my classes are comprised mostly of Hispanic, African American, and/or Special Education and ESOL students who struggle with literacy.
While my students are all readers, they often struggle to find something to read that they are both interested in and have the ability to access. At the beginning of the school year, they jump on a roller coaster ride of emotions and frustrations in regards to literacy. At first, they are both nervous and enthusiastic about the attractiveness of a new school year and a new teacher. However, as they become more frustrated academically, their enthusiasm wears down quickly and they become discouraged.
Last year, I shared a read aloud from a new novel with my students. Immediately, I had them doubling over in laughter and shouting out with anticipation. As a teacher you do not often come across a novel that most of your students can access and all will enjoy. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of the few exceptions to the rule. The witty narrative and entertaining sketches of a kid struggling to survive middle school breaks the barrier between reading levels, gender, age, and race. My request is for 30 copies of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a book extremely difficult to check out of the library because of high interest, to allow students the chance to read and discuss the novel. This is a novel all students in middle school can relate to and enjoy.
With your generous gift, you can provide my students with a book that will remind reluctant readers that there is joy in literature and importance in literacy. Nothing illuminates a classroom more than a book that flares up conversation and has students energized. I can say with certainty it will be a book that makes a lasting impression on them.
