Wilson Reading: Supporting Grade Students with Dyslexia

I need to attend the Wilson Introductory Workshop so I can provide my students with intensive instruction focused on early literacy intervention strategies.

My Students

My students are English Learners (ELs) and have disabilities and are on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). They speak another language other than English at home including the following: Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, and Arabic. Their English Language Development (ELD) levels range from 1-5. Some are newcomers and some are advanced with their academic English. Many are from low-income families and qualify for free lunch. The students who are on IEPs have specific learning disabilities like dyslexia which impacts their reading and writing.

My Project

By attending this training, I will be able to implement the Wilson Reading System. This will look like explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics to help students become stronger decoders. Students will be able to independently read by recognizing specific phonological patterns in the English language. This will help them to read with fluency.

This project will positively impact my classroom.

This is because English Language Learners who also have learning disabilities will be able to become stronger readers. Students will move from being frustrated as they read to become passionate readers who love to read and are successful
