My students need read-along books on CDs for Center Time to replace the old cassettes and tape player we currently have in order to update our Listening Center.

I remember my mother reading to me when I was a child. Many of my students do not have this luxury at home. What a wonderful way to spend time together while sharing a great book! Listening to someone read TO you is just as important as reading alone. Children enjoy listening to stories this way.
Our school is fairly new and has approximately 1200 students in Head Start to Grade 4.
We live in a rural area that has no mall, no movie theater and there is high unemployment. Some families do not even have transportation. We have a difficult time getting parents to attend school functions because of this issue. Also, this means that many of our children do not get to travel and most think the whole world is like our area. They really have no idea of how the rest of the world looks! They are amazed when they see pictures of animals, oceans, mountains and large cities. It hurts me when I talk about the beach that I love so much and they have never even seen the ocean or had their feet touch the sand. It is my job to have them experience these things-without really going and seeing in person. Here's where taking a trip through the world of books is so important.
As I stated before, since some of our families do not have transportation, this means that many of our children do not get to travel and they think the whole world is like our area .As their teacher, I want them to know about the world and its many wonderful attractions. What better way for them to travel to these places than through books? Our children love to listen to someone read to them and by having a Listening Center, they can listen to the books that they have chosen as their favorites on their own when I am with other students. This is the most important center in our classroom to the children.
Please help us get an up-dated Listening Center.
We love to listen to stories but the cassettes we have are old and worn out! We need to update to CDs and we will keep on listening!
