Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Get Ready, Set, Go! Little ones love to play, learn, and explore. I am the teacher of a class of 4 year olds, 15 to be exact. Yes, Pre-kindergartners. These children come from limited English proficient, extremely at risk, and educationally deprived backgrounds. The school in which I teach is a Title I school where over 90% of the population is on free or reduced lunch.
The universal language of children at this age is a love of playing. Playing is learning to a four year old. It's difficult to play when the learning materials are old, broken, outdated, doesn't work anymore, and just plain no fun.
I would like to provide hands on materials (and activities) that can be versatile and used in a variety of ways. Secondly, and equally important, is to foster a positive self awareness. Thirdly, the goal is for exploration. Giving students an opportunity to decide for themselves what and how to use materials. Kinda like utilizing those creative juices. Believe me four year olds are extremely curious, enthusiastic, energetic, nosy, and creative.
I am in desperate need of manipulatives and gross motor materials that will be fun as well as challenging. Having fun and innovative materials will allow young children to make connections and foster an understanding of their world. Students will have the opportunities to explore, create and learn. These are lifelong skills necessary for a successful productive future.
The materials and experiences will be used for 15 four year olds that are new to the school setting. These students are most in need of positive learning experiences. This is a public school pre-school which seeks to transition young children from home to school, build self esteem, and to prepare students for kindergarten.
In the Daisy class (the name and title of my class) our pledge is as follows: I pledge today to do my best, at playtime, storytime, and all the rest. I promise to follow the rules, in my class and in my school. I like myself and others too. I'll expect the best in all I do!!!
