My classroom is made up of 25 students. It is about half and half boys and girls. The students come from a variety of backgrounds. Only 6 of my students attended preschool before entering kindergarten.
The students in my class come from a variety of economic backgrounds, and have many different learning and social needs.
I have several children in my classroom who are identified as special education students and have their own individual needs. I also have several students who just entered the country right before school began in August.
My school is located in a suburban neighborhood and has over 450 students. All of the students in the school receive free lunch and breakfast.
My Project
Reading takes children to new places and introduces them to new concepts and new worlds. Data shows us that students who read better on assessments and are more successful in the real world. The items being requested will help to create a comfortable and cozy place in our room to build wild readers in my students.
Reading is such a critical part of life that we must foster a love of reading in children from the very beginning.
As school we are focused on building wild readers in all of our students and this is a start. Each of the items requested will become part of a comfortable reading zone within our classroom. The carpet pieces will be utilized to create an area that is cozy and welcoming to make a place for the students to relax and read. The bookshelf will be used to house new bins of books being donated to our classroom for the students. The chair will become part of the reading area to allow two students at a time to sit and buddy read and share their love of reading with one another. The purchase of the cushions will round out the area allowing for many students to be part of this area.
Creating this area will be a benefit to all the students in my classroom this year and in the future. Working to build strong, independent and wild readers in my kindergarten students begins first with access to books and then to creating an area where they can retreat relax and read. Students who have a chance to read, books to read and places to read build their reading skills and become life long wild readers. All of these items will be such a benefit to my students.
