I am a first grade teacher from Texas in a self-contained classroom. After teaching first grade for 6 years, I know how important it is to have literacy work stations that are appealing to my students. They are coming from kindergarten and are used to working, but also playing at centers and things are different in first grade. They come in asking when they get to go to centers, and I must explain that in first grade we don't have blocks or Legos, we have to work! The items I am proposing for my class workstations can all be used independently and are great skill builders. The Write and Publish Activity Center will be used in the writing station. It targets many standards, such as: the writing process, writing for different audiences, writing complete sentences, spelling, capitalization, and grammar. The fill in the blank phonics stamps will be used in my ABC word work station to help reinforce blends, digraphs, and higher level vowel sounds; all important 1st grade skills. Finally, the Reader's Response Pocket Chart is perfect for the listening station. After the students listen to the book on cd or tape, they can respond using the given prompt in the chart. They are able to explore characters, plot, setting, and much more with the prompts. This is a great comprehension tool. All of these items would work great in reinforcing the skills needed in first grade. Thanks for reading and considering Wild About Workstations!
