My students need 12 Science activities that will allow them to apply Science concepts through Science cds, books, critical thinking enrichment questions and hands on activites.
There's a Chinese proverb which states "Tell me, I’ll forget
Show me, I’ll remember Involve me, I’ll understand". Students have been told how to do Science with limited experiences.
In this population, students do not have the overall experiences to practice Science at home nor in previous years of schooling.
Due to statewide assessment, not only do students need the opportunity to practice science but the reinforcement opportunity as well. Science FCAT scores are low, 31% of students, show they understand science.
My Project
Overall, I am requesting items like "Reaching the Standards: Science Teacher Guide, and "New Path Learning High School Chemistry Study Cards and CD-ROM", in addition to, more science activity ideas to use with my students in class. I am also seeking to implement a technology based program to use as a reinforcement to labs. The anticipated outcome is for students to have experience in lab and retention of scientific concepts so they can make better grades on science testing.
My project will make a difference in helping to raise student assessment scores by using the High School Biology Classroom Presentation/Assessment CD-ROM and giving them the scientific practice to be able to apply concepts when tested.
Students in this population have so many cards stacked against them, low reading levels, nonparticipating parents, low socioeconomic status, that it is a challenge getting students motivated and able to retain material. This project serves to help combat school factors to help students reach with success on standardized testing NCLB
