My Students

How can you not enjoy reading a book? Is it because someone didn't take the time to share how great reading can be? We want to have the kids put down their Wii and pick up books, but we need your help!

Our school library serves about 270 students, grades K-5 in a diverse, high need area.

We have a limited budget for books. We would like to create a lunch bunch to get the kids excited about reading. Not everyone has someone at home to sit, read, and discuss a book with them. The kids love being in a small group with an adult. We can create this through a lunch time reading club. Think of the discussion that are generated from a great book!

My Project

We, classroom teachers and librarian, would like to create a lunch bunch. We would get together a few times a month to discuss the books we are reading. The kids would also have a place on-line where they can blog about the books they are reading. We know that technology is the future so we are working to incorporate it. If kids hear others talking about the exciting books they are reading, I know others will want to join. The books we are requesting are books that have been nominated to receive the Mark Twain Award for the 2010-2011 school year. This is always a great mix of titles that will catch their attention. We are unable to purchase multiple copies of the titles for the library due to the shortfalls that schools are facing. These titles can be reused with future reading club groups!

We can get kids to enjoy reading again and this is the first step.

Most of us have that one book that we will never forget but the kids today are not as lucky! Help us plant the seed. You can help US make a difference.
