My students need white lab coats. The white lab coats will provide empowerment and a sense of formality in science labs at WIHS.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I hope to go to college." I dream to be an engineer." "My goal is to graduate high school." These statements come from new-to-country immigrants at W International High School. Our students possess grit and desire to achieve stakeholders' dream for them: their high school diploma!
Students come from various places around the world in search for a better life.
The majority of students come to W International High School (WIHS) as refugees or undocumented. Many of our students are homeless and/or highly mobile. For many children, WIHS is the first experience of formal education. One way to support learners is to support realia in the classroom. Realia, like white lab coats, that is content and age appropriate, encourage excitement and connections to content. The staff's greatest desire is for students to find WIHS a comfortable, safe, validating place for personal and academic growth. Supporting white lab coats in Physical Science classes will empower students to see themselves as scientists because they are!
My Project
Students will be using the white lab coats weekly, if not daily. With the white lab coats learners will have the opportunities to feel like and to look like real scientists. Learners will also have the opportunity to acknowledge they are scientists! In addition, students will experience what other high school students do. Wearing white lab coats in a science lab is an aspect of being a scientist. Many peer-scientists in our district have white lab coats and/or a designated lab space for experimental learning. Our students do not have a designated lab space for this class. Wearing lab coats will help students to transition into experimental learning. Students are already acting like scientists, and the lab coats will enforce their learning and their confidence in science.
Students' confidence and connection with Physical Science will increase with the white lab coats because learners will be making a physical and a visual connection with the content.
I foresee the lab coats as a transformation in Physical Science learning as students move from thinking and acting like scientists to looking like scientists they are. Wearing lab coats will encourage a sense of belonging in the classroom and the school (and the community!)as a WIHS Scientist!
