While I have yet to meet my Kindergarten students for the upcoming school year, I know that some will only speak Spanish or French at home and most, if not all, will live below the poverty level. Some will be homeless, living in hotels, with other families, or in shelters. Many will have experienced trauma, have relatives in prison, and/or witnessed violence and gang activity in their homes or neighborhoods.
Every student at our Title I school receives free breakfast and lunch each day and many receive food to sustain their families over the weekend.
Second Harvest Food Bank comes to our school once a month and provides food for every family at our school! Staff at our school will volunteer for many after-school activities to assist our students. We as a school work very hard to make sure our students and their families are given every chance possible to succeed!
Kindergarten kiddos are so fun to teach! They are always eager to learn and being the sponges they are, they learn very fast! I just want to make sure that they have fun, too.
My Project
If you have ever been around a 5 year old child then you know they cannot (nor should they) sit still for an extended length of time. However, kindergarten is not what it used to be. Now they learn to read and comprehend leveled text, write sentences and add and subtract numbers up to ten! There is a lot to learn!
That's enough pressure without making them sit still too, don't you think?!?
I am requesting wobble stools and bouncy bands to give them more options to move and groove while learning! I already allow them to stand or get on their knees if they need to. But some kids just need more movement. With these stools they can move them easily without flipping over as they do when they lean back in the chairs. They are also very mobile and can be used either at their table or other areas around the room. Thank you for helping me help my awesome kids!
