My school is considered to be high poverty with many at risk students. There is a high percentage or students receiving free or reduced lunches. I have three students with special learning needs. Ten out of of twenty-two of my students receive Title One services to help them become stronger, more successful readers. Many of my students come to school to be loved.
Students in my classroom have a lot of energy.
They spend a lot of time outside of school playing behind electronics instead of using their large motor skills. So when my students walk into our classroom every day they are full of energy and have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time. They need time to get their wiggles out!
My Project
My students have realized that second grade is a hard transition. They are required to sit for longer periods of time throughout the day. They are very energetic and extremely wiggly. It can be challenging for them to stay focused throughout the day.
My students asked for materials that they had in their kindergarten and first grade classroom that allowed them to move while they worked.
I have found that traditional seating does not work well for this group of students, so I offer them flexible seating options throughout the day. Students have the option to choose where they want to sit to complete their work, but currently we do not have any options that allow students to move while they work. The Hokki stools, bike peddles, and exercise bands would give each student a fantastic opportunity to wiggle while they work!
