Have you ever had to try to learn something new that was very difficult and you just couldn't sit still long enough to focus? This is something that many of my students struggle with on a daily basis. Their inability to remain still and focused prevents them from adequate learning.
I teach 3rd grade and my students rotate between myself and two other teachers.
They come to my classroom for Reading and Language Arts. My students live in an urban community and come from low-income, single parent homes and some live with custodial relatives. Out of the 68 third graders that I work with in one day, nearly half of them have been diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD. Unfortunately, half of those diagnosed are not medicated due to the parents' inability to pay for medications. As their teacher, I try to accommodate my students who have difficulties staying focused. As a result of their inability to remain focused, they tend to struggle with the academic content introduced in the classroom. Furthermore, the student who has ADD/ADHD tends to be a distraction to those around them and make it difficult for other to remain focused during instructional and independent work times.
My Project
I am requesting wiggle seats and fidgets as tools for my ADD/ADHD students. The wiggle seats and the fidgets are discrete tools that will provide my students with small opportunities for movement that will not be distracting to those around them, but will help to increase their concentration. In addition, while using the wiggle seat my students will have the opportunity to exercise their core muscles. These small core exercises can keep energy levels down, decrease distractions and help with focus.
Your donation for this project will make a difference in the life of the ADD/ADHD students in my classroom as it will provide them with the necessary tools to help them focus better during instructional times.
As a result they will have a better understanding of the content presented and find much success throughout the school year. Furthermore, the students around them will not be distracted by the "wiggly" student and will also be able to have better focus during class.
