Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
New Brunswick's school district enrolls more than 10,200 students from preschool through grade 12. Approximately two-thirds of the students speak one of 41 languages other than English at home. Demographically, 88 percent of them are Hispanic; another 10 percent are African-American. There are 13 schools: nine neighborhood elementary schools, a middle school, New Brunswick High School and Adult Learning Center. The majority of students in our neighborhood school are Hispanic, come from non-English speaking homes, and receive free breakfast and lunch. Although I have been teaching elementary school for over 20 years, in a special needs district (where I grew up), this is my first year as an Inclusion classroom teacher. Working with a Special Education Teacher, to meet the individual needs of all students - small group instruction is essential and various educational modifications are required.
Students benefit from various modes of seating arrangements, creative hands-on activities, and educational technology.
My Project
Help me give my students comfortable Flexible Seating, which will put them in control of learning and allow students' choices, that work best for them. During small group and independent work, students choose a location in the classroom that is comfortable and works best for them. Students sit at different tables, under desks, or sit on the floor. Student comfort is an essential element in motivating students to learn. When students are in control of seating choices, they feel comfortable, are engaged, and are empowered to learn.
Students are more inspired and engaged in their learning and less disruptive when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. Wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desk/higher tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get their wiggles out. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The comfy floor seats will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
Student choice inspires and motivates students to work collaboratively and independently, and provides them with the flexibility they need to be creative learners.
