I am so grateful to have a wonderful teaching job in the city of Ames. It is such a diverse city, and we get to teach students who come from many different backgrounds and home lives.
My students are my family.
We spend 9 months together, building relationships, learning and working together, sharing experiences and stories, and so much more. They teach me just as much as I teach them. My students are very diverse in all of their abilities, including reading, math, and social-emotional skills.
I strive to continue learning and working hard every day, setting goals for myself, and letting my students know what those goals are so they can help me achieve them and hold me accountable. I believe in teaching by leading, and I want them to see me as a human who cares passionately about them and who also makes mistakes.
I am not only teaching them second grade standards, but I'm teaching them how to be compassionate beings in our society. They have grown so much, and continue to grow each and every day. Everything we do, we do together.
My Project
My class is full of little bodies that need to wiggle! We are very lucky to already have some flexible seating options available to us in our school district, which provides us with round and square cushions along with wiggle stools. My students love the wiggle stools, and we have had to learn how to take turns and share them so everyone gets a chance to use them. I've noticed that many of my students need to be moving in order to focus or pay attention.
These balance boards will be beneficial to my wiggly students in multiple ways.
They will be able to use them while sitting at their desks to let their feet wiggle around without kicking items and distracting others with extra noises. They'll also be able to sit and lay on them while they work around the room so they can wiggle and move around.
I believe that having more options for my mobile students will be very beneficial to the focus and learning of my entire classroom.
