Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are always excited when they enter the classroom, especially on lab days. They enjoy hands-on activities, working in small groups and being able to explore with their peers. My goal is to provide my students with an engaging, fun and safe learning environment. My school is located in a low social economic neighborhood where 95% of the students are on free or reduced price lunch. Most of my students are faced with many challenges in the classroom and at home.
My Project
I want to create a space for all of our students to go outside for a hands on learning experience. Our school has a space that used to be a garden, but it has been over grown with weeds and needs some love. It has been my dream for sometime to recreate this space for all students Pre-K through Fifth to have an outside place to learn and grow.
My students love hands on learning, help us “dig in” and get our hands dirty as we learn about soil, composting, and gardening.
Before we can start “shoveling away” at the garden. I will provide my students with learning stations to help them understand how soil is created by watching the worms in the Worm-Vue to see what it is that they do all day. While my students are at this station they will be able to use the Hooki Stools so they can “wiggle like worms” as they observe. We will review weathering, erosion, and deposition. The final station will be learning about compost: what it is and how to make it. The worms will be helping with this when we get outside to the garden.
