Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Good morning, Miss Kent." Every morning I hear this from 21 smiling first graders as they enter our classroom. All of them are eager and ready to start their full day of learning. They bring me pictures they have colored or drawn for me and eagerly sharing stories of what they did the night before all while getting ready to learn.
Our classroom is a place where my students know they are safe, cared about and loved.
Not only do they receive an education but the support and love of their classmates all while learning how to show love and support their fellow classmates. Our classroom is full of diverse learners who all speak another language other than English.
Many of my students receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Some families only have one car, parents work multiple jobs to support their family while students have to help watch younger siblings.
Despite these challenges, all of my students come to school eager and ready to learn. Their smiles on their faces when they finally get a concept they have struggled with is why I get up each day and am excited to go to work.
My Project
"Sit still, stop moving around, focus on your work." These are all things that I and other teachers have asked our students to do. One day after saying these things all day I realized that I needed to make my classroom a place where students can move around and still complete their work. That is where flexible seating and the need for wobble stools came from.
Children are constantly moving and wiggling, but in school we are asking them to sit and work for 8 hours a day.
Honestly, 5 and 6 year olds don't sit still for that long and these stools will allow them to move while doing their work.
Help me, help them wiggle their way to success! These stools will allow my students the opportunity to get their wiggles out while staying at their seat and doing their best.
