Dress like a farmer and drive your tractor to work day, are just two examples of the kind of district that my students are a part of. Located in the thumb of Michigan, the town my district is located in is known for being agriculturally focused. However, many of my families are struggling to put food on the table. We are a title one school with 42.7% of our population being considered economically disadvantaged. In my classroom, three quarters of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Overcoming a variety of obstacles just to be ready to learn, my students are resilient.
In my classroom, everyone is an equal no matter where you came from or what you had for dinner. Once at school, my students put all of their boundless energy and focus into their learning whether it is creating their own book or learning how to read.
My Project
Chaos coordinator, is often how Kindergarten Teachers are described due to the very active nature of the age that we teach. My students are no exception to this. They are constantly on the go and moving one hundred miles a minute. With that said, when asking them to concentrate on reading, writing or math for fifteen minutes at a time, it can often be very hard for them to sit still for that amount of time. The wobble chairs and stability balls will allow my students the movement that they need while being able to focus on their learning.
One size does not fit all!
In the classroom, this is also the case. Research has proven that children do not all learn the same. Allowing the students the use of the stools and exercise balls will help fill a need for students that do not learn well by sitting in a chair. These stools and balls will provide my students with the choices and experiences that they deserve.
