"Play is talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." -Fred Rodgers
This quote describes exactly what kindergarten students need to do to increase their learning.
My students are energetic five- and six-year-old children who need a variety of ways to learn. For many, English is their second language, and, because of their different learning styles, most of our day centers around hands-on learning. My school is one of a few schools in the district that has an ELL (English Language Learners) program.
My Project
Kindergarten is no longer about play, and students are expected to sit and learn for extended periods of time. Five- and six-year-old children need to move, and these balance balls will allow for movement.
My students crave sensory input while they are learning.
The balance balls I am requesting will allow this. Students can bounce and wiggle without having to get up and move around the classroom. We currently have playground balls in milk crates to simulate the balance balls. The balls are not deflating due to the fact they are not meant for the purpose we use them for. I would love to be able to have my students use them for the purpose they are meant for which is outside play.
