My second graders are a very enthusiastic bunch of kids! They love school and they love learning about every new idea. We are a Title I school in southeast San Francisco where the majority of the students are first or second generation Americans, 50% are English language learners, and 84% are from low-socioeconomic family settings. As second graders they are really launching into academics as they become stronger readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists.
They enjoy collaborating in every aspect of school, whether on their reading and writing, or working together to uncover new math principles.
I love how much they want to help each other and learn about the world around them. That said they are still little people learning how to live in a big world and deal with big emotions. As their teacher I am eager to support them in all of their learning from academics to how to meet their social-emotional needs.
My Project
My second graders are beginning to settle in as students, but still need to get their big emotions and kid wiggles out! The sensory bottles and squeeze balls will go into a peace corner where students needing a moment of peace can take a five-minute break before rejoining the class ready to focus and learn. Students need the chance to take a mental break, just like adults, and these bottles give them a chance to focus their attention on something else before jumping back into learning.
The Kick-bands and wiggle cushions will increase the seating options in my room that allow students to both wiggle and work.
Right now my students are learning to focus for longer and longer periods of time as they grow their skills as readers, writers, and mathematicians. These seating options will help them learn to focus because they let students wiggle while also staying in their seats!
