Wiggles For All While We Speech

Help me give my students a balance ball chair, a step stool to reach the chairs, and sliders to move our table away from my soon to be whiteboard!

My Students

I provide direct speech-language therapy to a wide variety of students with speech and language impairments. My students are quite diverse and have unique needs. Among the skills we work on are things such as: articulation, vocabulary, following directions, social skills, language skills, listening comprehension, and grammar. My school also has three self-contained autism classrooms. Some children in these classrooms are non-verbal or minimally verbal and are working on very basic skills. I work with students PK through 5th grade at a Title I school.

All of my students are working on improving their communication skills, whether that be verbally, with sign, or assistive technology.

Some students need additional support in vocabulary development, others need support with higher level language skills such as idioms, multiple meanings, and predicting outcomes. Other students have phonological or articulation disorders, which affect their ability to produce sounds correctly and impacts their ability to convey their message to listeners effectively.

My Project

This additional balance ball chair will allow all group members to have a balance ball chair, as I have had to have some groups of 4 this year. One student used a teacher chair since I only have three balance ball chairs! I also now have some tiny little ones that could use some extra help getting into these chairs. The step stool will help make this an easier task for them, allowing them to be more independent. The furniture sliders will allow us to move our table to utilize my new whiteboard that will soon be installed.

The response to these three chairs has been incredible to see.

Having sensory needs met for these children has been so heartwarming to see. For the first time since I have been at this school, one of my students who needed frequent sensory breaks of standing, jumping and other movement breaks sat in this chair for the full half hour! My goal is to be inclusive of all those who feel this type of chair can help them!
