I work in an inner city school in Providence, Rhode Island. I teach 125 students each day in my grade 6 Social Studies classes. I have a diverse population of students which includes Special Education and English Language Learners (some which are newcomers to the country). Most of my students receive either free or reduced-priced lunch. I try to make a print-rich, bright & colorful classroom for my students. I want them to feel happy & comfortable when they enter my classroom and know that they are able to gather information from various resources around the classroom.
My students this year are having a difficult time sitting down for an extended period of time. Most are wiggling & woggling in their seats trying to stay focused on the task. The classroom size is small for the number of students I have each period. I’m not able to have kids move around as freely as I’d like them to do for certain tasks. I recently purchased 2 yoga stability ball chairs, and it has help tremendously with their attention.
Having more flexible seating options in my classroom will help these students who need to wiggle in their seats, but may not always have the opportunity to move around the class.
Students need to be successful in school. If I can help improve academics by simply changing some furniture & giving options for seating, then I want to provide these materials for them.
