I am a reading intervention teacher at a small K - 8 school in Chico, CA. I teach two language arts blocks and spend the rest of my day working with kids in K-8 one on one or in small groups using intensive intervention programs. My students are full of imagination, creativity, compassion and kindness. They are artists, athletes, singers, dancers, engineers, gardeners, and lovers of animals. However, in addition to all these amazing strengths and talents they also have areas of struggle. Reading, writing, spelling, memorization, comprehension and attention are difficult for the kids I work with. The majority exhibit signs of dyslexia and many are working to manage symptoms consistent with ADHD.
School can already be an overwhelming place for my students who are overcoming learning and attention differences, couple this with a community immersed in trauma and daily life can be challenging.
Butte County students have the highest number of adverse childhood experiences in California. Therefor, in addition to reading and writing I'm striving to teach positive social emotional health and one way is through encouraging my students to self-regulate and self-advocate for whatever they need to fulfill their amazing potential.
My Project
Movement improves attention and memory and allows for a more positive classroom experience. Research has shown that when students are allowed to move they are more actively engaged in learning. By having my students sit on Wobble chairs or stability cushions they can continue to participate in class while fulfilling their natural desire and need to fidget.
My students are full of energy and spunk and while we do take frequent movement breaks I would love more ways to tap into the movement - memory connection for learning.
