Our student population consists of many second language learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Our students, parents, and staff have much pride in their school. We are small but mighty.
The students in my class come from all different backgrounds.
One of the things they have in common is a thirst for learning. They are active learners and have the need to move. I often have several special needs students including ones on the Autistic Spectrum and AD(H)D children in any given year.
Recently, there has been a incredible amount of research into the use of flexible seating with special needs students in a classroom. The research has shown that using this tactic, makes students more actively engaged in the learning. It also gives them a way to have an active outlet without disrupting those around them. Flexible seating also motivates students to want to attend school. Students with ADHD or Autism are able to move and learn at the same time. Research also suggests that students develop a sense of community which will in turn improve social skills.
My students, and I, will benefit greatly from flexible seating including the requested stools, balance balls, and wobble stools.
We will be able to focus on what needs to be completed, and not that everyone has the same seat, at the same table. We will be able to concentrate on what is actually important - learning.
