I am a special education teacher of K-2 students. Several of my students have ADHD, ADD or autism. They struggle to stay focused during classroom lessons and stay engaged in the activity. Many of them also struggle to self-regulate themselves and need sensory breaks throughout their day. These students are often not able to meet their sensory needs through normal activity in their day and need tools to effectively and appropriately meet these needs to be successful. I would like for my students to be able to be able to focus and self-regulate so they can stay in their general education room.
My Project
Research has shown that wiggle stools can be one of the most effective ways to help children with ADHD, ADD and autism. I would like to have Hokki stools for my group table in my room as well as have extras that can be used within the general education classrooms. Research has also shown that providing sensory items for students is an effective way for them to self-regulate and learn to effectively and appropriately meet their sensory needs. Students would use the sensory items in my classroom to regulate themselves or meet sensory needs that can not currently be met within their classroom.
By having access to Hokki stools, students will be able to move around while still staying engaged in the lesson or task at hand.
Sensory tools will provide students an outlet for their sensory needs in a positive manner rather than seeking alternative ways to meet those needs. Students will benefit from both the stools and sensory items by being engaged more of their school day. A more engaged child will lead to a smoother day within their classroom and ideally increased academic achievement.
