My students come to school excited to learn and to be in a positive learning environment. With a population of about 650 students in our fourth and fifth grade school, 1/4 of students come from military families. Also, many of our students come from low income families, receiving backpacks of food on the weekends. Despite various hardships, my students are still eager to learn and to try their best.
I currently teach math, science, and social studies in an inclusion setting of about 48 students between two classes.
Most of my students' learning takes place in differentiated small group centers. Students love centers because it allows them the opportunity to learn and ask questions in a smaller setting at their individual level. Their voices can be heard and answered without fear of failure.
I have a lively group of students with an eagerness to learn. They are very creative, smart, and insightful. I have been successful in engaging my learners through games, projects, engaging reads, and an enthusiasm for teaching and learning.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will directly be used during the school day to increase focus and concentration through sensory output. Many teachers I work with have described the wonders of flexible seating for students. They have seen a great improvement on student concentration because they are allowed to move and wiggle without disruption. In fact, it is encouraged. I have requested balance balls and wiggle seats specifically for this reason.
As we were all children at one time, we know that it is sometimes hard to focus when we are forced to sit in a small chair for hours on end.
I have several bouncy, active students who would greatly benefit from a seat that allows them the opportunity to move while learning. For some students who need extra movement throughout the school day, these seats will be the tools they need to be successful during the day.
