My students need alternative seating such as stability balls, wobble chairs, and stability pads to build core strength and improve focus during direct teaching sessions.
The children in my classroom are 4 years old and for many this is their first experience in school. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they participate in the classroom for the first time is priceless! Our school is a Great Start Readiness Program which is a state funded program for children who are at risk. Our goal is to provide children with a strong foundation in academics and social skills to be successful inside and outside of school.
My preschool class is comprised of 16 amazing students, all of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
Providing my students with opportunities and experiences they may not be able to participate in at home is essential to prepare them for later school experiences.
My Project
Preschool children learn best through active movements. Engaging large muscles during academic lessons provides opportunities for multiple neural pathways to develop in the brain, making it easier for children to recall information later on. While we are active throughout the day, there are still portions of time where children sit for table activities and whole group lessons. Sitting still is tough for active and curious little people!
Alternative seating such as stability balls, wobble chairs, and stability pads build core strength while improving focus during direct teaching sessions.
Active movements such as rocking on a wobble chair and bouncing on a stability ball will provide the sensory feedback young children need to stay focused during table lessons while enhancing their ability to remember information. Stability pads will provide children opportunity to move their bodies safely on the carpet during whole group lessons.
