Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In one short month I will be taking on approximately 40 new third graders! Although I have not met these learners yet, I can tell you a few things about them. Many of my students will come from low-income households, but they will come to school eager to learn. They are creative, energetic, and motivated individuals. Each of my students will bring their own set of unique needs with them to school everyday, and it is my job to meet those needs.
This year I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to take ownership in their learning by giving them choice in where and how they complete their work.
My Project
Gone are the days when you would walk into a classroom and see students working individually in nice, neat rows. As educators we have come to learn that, SURPRISE!, this traditional classroom set up does not work for every student. I am requesting materials to add to my collection of flexible seating options that will give my students the freedom to choose a learning space where they will work the best.
Picture this: you're in between meetings and need to get some work done at a local Starbucks. There are loads of options for seating.
There are couches, chairs with ottomans, booths with tables, and even tables with regular chairs. Which seating option do you choose? Most likely you're going to choose the spot you can sit and be the most productive. Some of us may choose the comfy seats to feel relaxed, and some of may choose the traditional table and chair to feel productive and on task. I want my students to be able to make the same choices.
Research has shown that flexible seating in the classroom has immense benefits. Research conducted by Herman Miller states, "Comfortable classrooms--physically and psychologically--promote a sense of well-being, keeping minds focused, and limit distractions." Flexible seating options will improve my students' ability to stay focused and on task.
I want to be able to continue to provide a learning environment with choice that accommodates the needs of all 40 of my learners. If funded, this project will add the following seating options for my students:
-Yoga balls at a table
-Carpet seating
-Stools at a table
Imagine the focused, engaged, smiling faces you would see as you entered my classroom!
