My students are fun, bright, unique, and speak many different languages. Their diverse backgrounds gives our classroom life as we learn from each other.
In order to be eligible for our early childhood program, students must have a diagnosed disability, come from low-income housing, have a parent incarcerated, homeless, or have other at-risk factors.
Our students ages range from 3 to 5 years old, a crucial developmental time for children. Our program focuses on the whole child by providing 2/3 of their daily nutrition a day, checking heights, weights, and other health needs. Many of our students have never been in a class setting before and are learning how to interact with peers, regulate their emotions, and communicate with others.
My Project
Flexible seating will be used during large and small group times to help students stay focused and regulated while working on their learning goals. These seating options give children choices so that they can feel in control of their body while also still being engaged with their peers. Some of our students have physical disabilities which makes it difficult for them to sit upright on a circle spot, flexible seating can give them the support they need while keeping them close to their peers.
Students who require sensory output will benefit from the sensory rings, wands, and gel shapes.
These items can also be used to help students who come from trauma regulate their bodies and calm themselves down by watching the liquid move in the wands or squeezing the gel shapes.
These items will dramatically help all students participate throughout the day, whether they need physical support to sit at circle time, sensory output, or items to help regulate their brains during an emotional crisis. Items like these will be used everyday throughout learning settings.
