My students this year have a variety of learning styles. Each child has the potential to accomplish remarkable things throughout the school year. But, each child also needs to complete tasks in his or her own way. I provide a structured classroom, but am sensitive to my student's needs. I like to provide learning incentives, along with ways for students to channel their energy.
Many of my students struggle with focusing and with completing assignments.
I help my students set learning and behavior goals, so that they can keep caught up and feel good about their progress. I want to challenge each student enough, without overwhelming them!
My students tend to have a positive attitude, as they are focusing on kindness this year. We are Buddy Reading with our Cluster Unit, and look to provide service and friendship to these students. This helps my students to think about others more, and to focus less on their own needs. Students are leaving notes of kindness on other people's desks, in books, or wherever they see fit! They are so excited when someone finds a kind note! This helps my class to focus on and to find out positive things about others!
My Project
Alternative seating helps students to manage the over-stimulation or the under-stimulation of the classroom to control their own concentration of the task that needs to be completed. Some of my students are moving and wiggling all the time. The more they can move and wiggle in the class, the better they attend to their work. As I teach the whole group, there aren't many wiggle opportunities for my kids.
While I teach the large group, I can provide seating options to help meet the sensory needs of some of my students.
The flexible seating will be used as an option for the students to manage their wiggles long enough to concentrate on the information I am teaching. I want to help my students self-monitor and manage their behaviors. Wiggling and moving is a good thing for many situations, but for some situations it needs to be managed. In realizing these situations, students have options to use an alternative seat and control their focus. Identifying these moments are learned as a child and they know there are ways to cope with it.
