Wiggle, Wiggle! Flexible Seating For First Graders!
My students need active chairs (wiggle chairs), wobble cushions, and bouncy chair fidget bands in order to incorporate flexible seating options in our classroom.
I teach at a Title 1 school located near a military base. Because of this I have a wide variety of students each and every year. My first grade students are all unique and each brings their own shining personality into our classroom!
They are creative, thoughtful, full of questions and little wiggle worms!
They absolutely love hands-on, engaging activities that allow them to get moving and work in an environment that bests suits their needs. They come to school each day ready to take chances and try new things. Each child in my class loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best varies greatly. In our classroom we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning options to ensure that each student’s needs are met, right where they are. I love teaching my first graders and feel so lucky that each year I have a new group of firsties that are excited and eager to learn!
My Project
While I strive to incorporate varying techniques and strategies to reach each student, I truly believe flexible seating options will add another level to our learning. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. It is difficult as an adult to sit still for even just an hour; imagine being 6 years old and asked to sit at a desk during an entire school day. Making sure students are comfortable and able to move is an essential part of motivating them. I have noticed a significant difference in my students when they are given a choice in their seating.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work, make good choices, and get more work completed when given a choice of where and how they will work.
The wiggle chairs, wobble cushions, and fidget chair bands I have selected will allow more of my students access to flexible seating arrangements which will allow them to make more effective learning choices. I have seen how choices can positively affect my students work and attitude and hope that by providing more flexible seating options I am able to help my students reach their fullest potentials!
