I am a special education facilitator/teacher moving within the district from middle school back to elementary school. My students range in ages from 5 to 12. For most of my students, academics are not the first priority, as shelter and food are a daily concern. I will be working with students with a variety of intellectual, physical, and medical needs.
I want to help my students who have the wiggles improve their academic success through movement while remaining in their seats.
My Project
The students that I am working with have difficulty staying seated while they work. These children need to move about in their seats and are typically called 'sensory seekers'. In a typical classroom setting these children are not always capable of sitting and completing desk work. They tend to be labeled fidgety and often get into trouble.
When students have flexible seating options they are more apt to be more successful learners.
Providing my students with wiggle seating will allow for them to be fidgety without drawing negative attention or disrupting classroom instruction.
Kids need ample time to run, jump, climb, and get dirty! When sensory needs are not met through active sensory play, the brain seeks out the movement it needs by fidgeting and wiggling, therefore by incorporating wiggle seats within the classroom the sensory needs are met and students can learn.
