My Students
My 26 first grade students come from a diverse background in a low socioeconomic area in Southern California. 93% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. We are a STEM prep elementary school and provide opportunities for our students to excel in math and science. These opportunities give our students the chance to thrive in today's changing society. I believe students need to feel valued and safe in their school community in order to learn. This is something I strive to achieve in my classroom.
Our classroom community is a place where we feel safe and valued for our unique contribution to this world.
With the rigorous demands of education today, I think it is important to remember they are still little and they need to move around and engage in their own learning. I strive to give my students a fun learning environment and include movement and song in my lessons when possible.
My Project
I am requesting wobble chairs and wobble cushions for my classroom. We currently have one wobble chair in our classroom and I have observed the benefits of students being able to move and work in a productive way. We alternate and let different students use it during the day. I would love to allow more students to have access to this type of flexible seating throughout the day. I have observed students who have a difficult time completing work having success when using the wobble chair. Many students (and adults too) just need to move while working. Having more wobble stools will allow for more students to choose the seat that works best for them.
My students have bundles of energy and I want to help them channel it in a positive way.
These wobble chairs and wobble cushions are the perfect way to help my active learners focus on the task while still moving around. I would like them to have choices when working at the carpet and desks. The wobble cushions will allow more students to move around on the carpet while still paying attention. I know my students will love these options and it will just add to our classroom community.
