Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Emerson/Bandini is located in Logan Heights and has been serving our community for over 100 years. The enrollment is around 500 students with an additional 90 PK students in 4 full day classrooms.
96% of our families qualify for Title I and we are 4th in the district wide Title I ranking.
Our population is predominantly Hispanic with 73% of our TK-grade 5 students classified as English Language Learners (ELL). Our ELL students are one of our target groups that we need to support in our SPSA to close the achievement gap. 16% of our overall population of students qualify for supports and services through an IEP.
In Room 108 all of the students have a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
My Project
Flexible seating allows children to choose the type of seating they find most comfortable for them. Our bodies needs to move; in fact, studies have shown that movement and learning utilize the same part of the brain, so engaging your muscles while learning helps improve student's working memory.
Many of the students that I work with have attention issues, so the opportunity to provide meaningful movement will increase their learning.
The Active Learning Stools, Wobble Cushions, and Resistance Bands will provide additional seating options for my students that will allow them the ability to make small movements that do not interrupt their learning.
