I teach an extremely diverse group of first graders in an urban setting. Students in my classroom travel near and far to attend our fine arts school each day. My kiddos arrive with many differences--appearance, socioeconomic status, background, academic ability, parental involvement and more! I admire the differences in my students and constantly celebrate the beauty of diversity in our classroom. I am truly a lifelong learner myself and am always finding ways to bring new and exciting ideas into my classroom.
Reading is the foundation for all learning in my first grade classroom and my student's lives.
As an educator, I strive to remain informed of research-based instruction and best practices. Because of my students' wide range of reading abilities, it is my responsibility to teach them with the most appropriate curriculum and supplemental resources that address their needs. I am confident that with the necessary materials, my students' performance in reading and all other areas of their lives will prosper!
My Project
Independent reading is an essential part of my first grade curriculum. It gives my students the opportunity to apply the skills and strategies they've learned while I meet with small groups and/or do one-on-one conferring. My kiddos love hearing that it's time for us to build our stamina to become better readers!
First grade readers need choice to engage at their highest levels during independent reading time each and every day at school.
Several students struggle to focus during this time due to lack of comfortable seating. As a first grade teacher, I have observed many of my students are more focused and engaged in reading if they are given the opportunity to be seated comfortably. I first noticed this last year when a parent donated one large, cushiony chair to our classroom. As I'm sure you can imagine, making a rotation schedule for 30 students sitting in ONE chair is quite difficult and can cause some frustration. Having several seating options for independent and buddy reading in our classroom will help my first graders not only stay engaged throughout the entire reading time, but also continue to build their strength as readers!
