Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I serve are learning in two languages with the goal of becoming biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural. As their teacher, my goal is to build a community where each student feels empowered and has the opportunity to discover their unique gifts within themselves and use those gifts for good. My goal is to build and foster a culture of efficacy, inclusion, collaboration, individuality, creativity, discovery, and safety.
Many of my students have experienced trauma; therefore, my greatest desire is to effectively and creatively meet their needs and help them build their emotional resilience through cultivating compassion, positive self-perception, purposefulness, empathy, courage, efficacy, play, creation, curiosity, acceptance, and perseverance.
The social and emotional growth of my students must come before and in collaboration with the academic growth, which will lead to their ultimate success!
My Project
Kids need to move! Flexible seating in the classroom gives students permission to wiggle while they work! The wiggle seats and floor cushions will provide my students the opportunity to work collaboratively and independently through allowing them choice in unique seating options to best accommodate their learning styles and physical needs.
Research says that movement in learning stimulates more of the senses; that alone is a powerful reason to build a classroom with substantial opportunity for student movement.
Movement in learning is also a powerful and effective way to provide students impacted by trauma with one form of trauma informed care.
Giving students physical tools and materials to use when they are learning and practicing strategies to emotionally self-regulate is imperative in a trauma informed classroom.
These materials will allow for practicing responsibility. Students will learn how to care for the materials, how to share the materials, and more importantly, learn how to self-regulate and understand their bodies and emotional needs to determine what they need, when they need it, and why they need it.
The students in my classroom who are not and have not been impacted by trauma also benefit tremendously from wiggling while they work. Brain research shows that movement in language learning has huge impacts and is highly effective!
These materials will aid in student engagement and learning by allowing them choice and comfort. Students will be able to wiggle, wobble, and bounce which increases oxygen to the brain and helps students' minds to remain focused. Flexible seating also help with sensory input for students to better focus and process information. While the research-based benefits of flexible seating through these requested materials are plentiful, flexible seating is simply FUN! What kind of positive and interactive learning environment is it without FUN seating options?!
