The students I work with in Math Strategies are enrolled in the class because they have delays in their math skills and require review and repetition of instruction for skill acquisition. Approximately 50% (sometimes more) of the students have IEPs. There are two sections; one section each day, on an alternating day schedule, with a maximum enrollment of 12 students per section.
These students learn in different ways than their peers, so various strategies are presented to assist them in becoming stronger math students.
I enjoy seeing them make progress and connections between their general math and math strategy classes. Students in the class experience a blended learning approach, in which station, rotation, team, whole group, and independent activities are intermixed. These chairs could be easily moved when switching to different activities.
After 23 years of teaching, I have learned that, regardless of paperwork or a diagnosis, all students learn best when placed in a welcoming and comfortable environment. I want my students to feel comfortable during the period, especially since they already struggle in the area of math and have some anxiety toward the subject.
My Project
These chairs would allow for student movement during instruction and learning. Flexible seating allows students to move and adjust themselves in a non-disruptive way. Students burn off excess energy and get the stimulus their muscles are looking for, making them more attentive while keeping their body more engaged in class. My classroom is small (maximum capacity of 12). These chairs could be easily stored under the tables when not in use. The chairs we currently have are frequently broken by students rocking backward on them because of their need to wiggle. Blue and yellow were chosen because they are the school colors.
