My students need flexible seats to helping their wiggling bodies be successful in school! Allowing the students to choose the different seating options will help students be successful throughout the day!
I teach in a high poverty/low income district. We are a Title 1 school. Every day my students come in to class ready to learn and try their best, even when some of them have early mornings so their parent can get to work. Most students in my class and the school in general receive free or reduced lunch. My students are active and love being able to move around while learning.
My kids are smart, caring, sweet, and kind.
My students may not always have the consistency at home but at school I strive to provide them consistency, support, and love. My students deserve nothing but that and more from me. I strive to show them that they can grow. Fostering GRIT and a Growth mindset will be an important part of our classroom environment.
My Project
One area my students struggle with is their need and want to move all of the time! I have a few wobble stools in my classroom now and we have a rotation for those that wish to use them. The focus in these students when they are on the wobble stool and their ability to sit a little longer than those in regular chairs is most definitely noticeable! I have provided fidgets for the bottom of their chairs and I try my best to provide brain breaks at each transition but sometimes just those are not enough! I would like to have some lap desks in my room so students can work on the floor, the yoga balls in with provided base would allow my little firsties to safely sit in wiggle.
Think about a 6 or 7 year old sitting at a desk or even the couch for that matter.
How long do those little kiddos last? Not very long is my opinion. I want to be able to allow my students choices to sit where they will be able successful that day. Providing many options such as the ones listed above as well as some bean bag comfy seats, and nontraditional seats like laundry baskets that kids love to sit in, I know classroom success would grow even more!
