Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a large, Title I elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona. English is a second language for all of my twenty-five students. My students are in the SEI (Structured English Immersion) program at our school, which means that they have not passed their English proficiency state test and receive additional language instruction throughout the day.
Giving my students an environment that is catered to their individual needs will help them be more successful.
Even though our classroom has enough desks and chairs, it is not the most comfortable learning space for a ten year old who is practicing their English language all day.
My Project
Wiggle seats and bouncy bands will provide movement for the kids who need to move while they are working, while minimizing distractions for their peers. I would also like to provide stress balls for students to help them focus while they are working or testing.
Many students at this age have a hard time controlling their bodies and need to move to "get their wiggles out," so to speak.
I want to give my students the tools they need to concentrate and work in a way that is successful for themselves, and contributes positively to the overall atmosphere of the classroom.
