I teach first grade in a small town. Our elementary campus that is pre-k through second grade. We are a TEA Title l, distinguished campus with about 430 students. Roughly 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price meals. We have a significant proportion of our students that are English language learners and socially economically disadvantaged.
From the very first day of school in my first grade classroom, we talk about how our class is a big family.
As a teacher, I spend more time with my students than their parents do. During that time, I not only teach them how to read, write, add and subtract, but also how to be the best person they can be. It is very important to me that my students know that they are loved and hold a special place in my heart. I try really hard to make learning fun and for my students to want to come to school every day.
My Project
By providing flexible seating in my classroom, my diverse learners will be able to address their personal needs, focus more effectively, and reach optimal learning.
Flexible seating options will provide students who struggle with the need to move and those with special needs such as ADHD to engage in needed movement while staying engaged in the learning process.
Having the option of movement while working, allows students to release their energy in a positive manner. In doing so, students are engaged more effectively in the learning process with fewer class distractions. The stools and balls will allow my students to have the freedom to choose which best fits their needs.
