If you were to step into our class, you would find 23 diverse, energetic, and eager first graders. With a natural love of learning, they are excited to read and explore the world around them. Writing, however, is a challenge for many. This project may be the key to overcoming this challenge.
Our school is located in a small town in Georgia.
Many of our students come from working class families with supportive parents. I have 23 students who are a combination of gifted students, English language learners, students who are below grade level, and those in the middle. All are hard working students who are excited to learn and try new experiences.
My Project
Think of a time when you had to sit for hours to work or study. Did you choose a hard plastic chair to sit in? Probably not - most likely, you sat in a nice cushioned chair or didn't even sit for the entire time. Why aren't our classrooms like this? Research shows that flexible seating boosts student performance and increases motivation and performance. I am ready to ditch our desks and have students choose to work where they learn best. These balance balls and wobble chairs will allow students to move while they learn - something that has been missing from the classroom.
Designing a collaborative work space will help to support the notion of teamwork and interdependence.
Every space in our classroom will be a learning area and we hope this will transform the way we learn and teach.
