Help me give my students flexible seating options like the wobble chair and opportunities for movement such as the stress and squeeze balls to use during class to help them stay in their learning brains.
The second-graders coming into my classroom in the fall are readers, writers, scientists and mathematicians. They are wonderers and questioners and they are discoverers. They are learning what the world around them looks like and the stories that are held within it. Second-grade students in this class are ready to start an adventure when they open a book.
They are excited to grow and learn as part of the community, both in and out of the classroom.
These students are ready to jump into their education and build their skills across curricula to deepen their connections to the lessons and their world.
My Project
The flexible seating choices and sensory tools I have requested are going to help meet the needs of many of the students in my class that need to have movement to help engage in learning. Many of my students learn best when they are not confined to a chair and have the option of wiggling and moving, this actually helps them become more involved and able to focus more easily during their lessons. The sensory tools provide the same option for students, helping them find movement during work time and focusing their mind on their tasks instead of focusing on how to stay still.
The wobble seats and inflatable seating as well as sensory tools will give my second grade students choice in their classroom and create a sense of agency over their own learning.
Some students need movement and others need comfort objects. Both needs will be served with these items. Research has shown that it is best for learning to engage the body as well as the mind. This project aims to address this research in the classroom. The flexible seating and sensory tools will serve students throughout the day in reading, writing, math and science.
