My Students

I teach third grade in a Native American boarding school. My students come from several reservations across South Dakota and its bordering states.

My students live on campus during the school year.

Most of our students have little or no contact with their families throughout the year.

My students have a strong desire to learn and succeed. They learn best when they can get up and move around. Keeping them involved and using hands-on activities keeps them attentive and on task.

My Project

I am trying to move my classroom toward a more flexible seating. My room is not very big and use of the flex-wobble cushions gives my students an opportunity to use them while they work at their desk or on the floor as they work in groups.

Flex-wobble cushions allow my students to be more comfortable while sitting in their desk/ or floor.

If my students are more comfortable in their seats, they will be more focused on their learning. Being more engaged in their learning will eliminate many other disruptions caused by their discomfort from sitting on a hard seat for a long period of time.

I have seen first hand in other classrooms within our school where flexible seating has increased student involvement and excitement toward their academic learning areas such as reading and math!
