My students need a rug, stools, cushions, and beanbags for flexible seating options. My students also need open shelves in order to access their needed materials.
The students in my classroom are some of the most amazing people I've ever met. Yes, the majority of them are 5 or 6, but that changes nothing. The majority of my students fall on the Autism Spectrum, and/or have a severe language impairment. Some of them are completely non verbal. Some of them have rough home lives. Some of them, have a brand new diagnosis, some of them have been diagnosed since 2. ALL of them are AMAZING!! They never let anyone tell them that something is impossible for them to do. My kids inspire me to be a better teacher, and person. They overcome things on a daily basis, that you and I may never have to deal with. They make progress, and gains daily. It's a true honor to watch them grow and learn.
Walt Disney once said; " It's kind of fun to to do the impossible", I'm privileged to watch my students do what some say should be impossible for them, every single day.
My Project
My students need room to wiggle while they're working. My students with Autism often get a case of the wiggles and need to move to different parts of the classroom to work. Having the new carpet, cushions, stools and bean bags, will allow students the opportunity to move to comfortable seating options and continue to progress with work. My students also need open shelving to access their materials. My students often struggle with getting their materials from book shelves or out of small cubbies. Having open shelving will allow my student to see what they need and easily access it independently.
Having flexible seating and open shelving will completely change how my students access their materials and move throughout their day.
