My fourth and fifth grade ESOL students come in very excited and eager to learn every day. My students are from all over the world and speak several different languages, but predominantly Spanish. As an ESOL teacher students come into my classroom at all levels of ability. Some students are fluent while others are just beginning their adventure of learning a new language. For many, this may be their first time in a classroom or school setting, so it is always a big adjustment.
Movement and flexible learning spaces have been the key to creating a learning space that is more reflective of the developmental needs of these young scholars.
My students thrive in an environment that is tailored to allow them to move, discuss, collaborate, and stretch their imaginations! My students are active and their exuberance needs a place to flourish, and a space that allows them to become 21st century learners.
My Project
All students benefit from spending time in non traditional seating, in this case on the floor! In my classroom, some children are experiencing school for the first time. I want to make sure the physical surroundings are relaxing and comfortable.
New area rugs will provide a comfortable and learning conducive environment for my students.
By adding a little more cozy-wiggle room, students are actually able to focus better. My students enjoy movement and activity throughout the day. By allowing students to actively move to a more comfortable spot while participating in their language and reading activities, they are more likely to stay engaged and focused for longer periods of time. There is a definite link between sensory-rich activities and increased learning ability.
My overall goal for this project is to create a relaxing, safe environment for students where they feel comfortable and can learn.
