My Students

My students are a part of an inclusion classroom in East Longmeadow, MA. I teach special education in reading and writing. Our school has students from grades 3-5. My 5th-grade students vary in independence. The work we do in this classroom is based on community, building relationships, working in groups, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. I like to support a lot of movement and group work in my classroom. I think the seats will allow my students the freedom to work in different groups and locations throughout the room.

My Project

In 5th grade, students are mature enough to sit at a desk right? They are too old for carpets and sitting on the floor. Or are they? Well, that might be the perception, but I feel that flexible seating is important (even at the 5th-grade level) so that all students have the best learning environment. I have students who are anxious and students who are more restless, and for those that need to change their seats frequently, the wiggle seat is a perfect Covid friendly seating option. They are cushions that can be moved around in the room, on chairs, the floor, etc. They can be used as backrests. They minimize distractions, provide personal coping skills or strategies and give the option for self-regulation.
