My students come to school every day ready to explore new ideas, strategies, and make connections to each other as they learn to develop new concepts. With all this amazing energy comes a variety of social, emotional, and physical needs as well. They want to learn but are sometimes faced with a challenge of “I’ve got to keep my body and hands moving.”
Every student deserves the chance to learn on an equal playing field.
Though I try my best to meet the needs of my 3rd grade students, there are some tools that would make a HUGE difference in supporting their learning.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to make choices while they are learning. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. My students are choosing to work in a variety of locations around the room on a daily basis using different tables and sitting on the floor with clip boards. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
I know that my students would be more engaged if they had the options of flexible seating and sensory tools available.
Joe Russell, Principal at Washington Elementary School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, says, “There’s a lot of research showing an increase in student focus and engagement. It may seem counterintuitive, but the more kids are allowed to wiggle, rock, and bounce, the more their brains pay attention.”
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them alternative seating options, safe outlets to chew on for those who have the need to chew, and hand-held options for fidgety students. I believe that every student deserves the tools they need to help them focus, stay attentive and reach the goals set before them.
