This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Teaching at a bilingual, K-8 grade school gives me a really unique experience with teaching an enormous diversity of students. Students from all over the world and from throughout our city converge here to blend their experiences into one community.
On a daily basis, I hear students speaking a multitude of languages, sharing their cultural backgrounds, and enjoying each other's company.
I am lucky enough to teach science to this community. Teaching an inquiry-based science class adds another level. Students are able to move throughout the classroom to explore, discuss, and question. The student-led classroom allows the students to push one another to a new level, challenging each other's thinking by asking higher-level questions.
My Project
I have used fidgets for years in class and have seen a huge improvement in the focus of my student's. As a teacher, I can't sit down and focus for more than a few minutes at a time and always need to be moving. The way school is set up, especially during social distanced times, limits student movement.
Giving students the opportunity to meet their needs of wiggling or hugging something soft helps their focus immensely.
My fidgets from the past are on their last leg and I need to add things for more movement like the wiggle seats and replace other fidgets
